The History Of Earnings Management Accounting Essay

In the last scarcely any decennaries the universe financial framework has changed. Without a doubt, central point on its structure had globalization, concern solidarity and building. These methods changed the activity of little, medium, and huge concerns. In the start of twenty-first century there are numerous sensational occurrences that are identified with total compensations course fakes. These occasions irregularity overall monetary framework ; they carry inadequacy of trust to financial specialists for advertise stock and this prompts mislead data about total compensations. These bogus reviews and made abuses brought an assessment that investors will make impeccably everything to expand their total compensation. Truth be told, I have come to accept that overall gains quality is one of the greater part of import aspects in monetary universe in the current twenty-four hours. The board overall gains play a significant capacity for money explanations and asset reports, as they strai ght influence financial exchanges, Bankss, speculators, loan bosses and numerous monetary foundations. The aim of this exploration paper is to answer the request what total compensations course is and how executives and listeners follow the guidelines using the rules of this device. For what reason is it so of import? Overall gains are an entirety of net gain that organization produce in a specific time of clasp. â€Å" Net salaries quality alludes to the capacity of revealed overall gains to mirror the organization ‘s genuine total compensations, each piece great as the utility of detailed total compensations to foresee future total compensations † . Monetary explanations are utilized in cognizing and anticipating the status of the organization to have the option to do a pick about stocks, notes, and others fluid resources. Financial explanations other than allude to consistence, stableness and fortitude in study total compensations. Bookkeeping does non cognize one basic rating strategy for figuring and demoing overall gains. That is the reason it is so difficult to men surate them and look at them through the business sectors. Overall gains show up in grouped figures: total compensation, grosss, runing total compensations and so forth. Frequently these variables do non plan anything to anyone and they do non loan for utile data about an organization ‘s position. I would wish to answer what grounds and inspirations drive chiefs to overall gains bearing. I feel that inspirations and reasons for existing are extremely of import and they can affect our thoughts that lead to our activities and conduct. I will so talk the theoretical model for overall gains heading and its utilization strategies. In the past mature ages reviews have put progressively a more grounded point of convergence on extortion detecting and misrepresentation disincentive. This examining endeavor has begun giving better outcomes. The army of overall gains fakes begin decreasing. In any case, there is as yet a huge per centum of organizations that utilization heading overall g ains in the off base way, that is the reason I would wish to demo what strategy listeners can use in watching misrepresentation in bearing total compensations. On history of numerous fakes and liquidations of enormous houses in the United States and Europe, there has been an ascent in association of nature of financial articulations and monetary investigations through listeners. The term, overall gains bearing is non new, it has been utilized in old mature ages. Mrs. Katherine Schipper was one of the principal who characterize overall gains heading. She characterized it as: â€Å" aë†â ¦.purposeful intervention in the outside monetary inclusion strategy, to acquire some private expansion † ( Schipper ) . Another yet progressively advanced record was given by Healy and Wahlen: â€Å" Net livelihoods course happens when chiefs use decisions in monetary inclusion and in organizing minutess to change financial investigations to either mislead a few partners about the understood in financial open introduction of the organization or to follow up on authoritative outcomes that rely upon the revealed bookkeeping Numberss † ( Healy and Wahlen ) . In basic words, it is utilization of a house ‘s total compensations ( straight or in a roundabout way ) to run into investors and speculators viewpoints in specific times of clasp. I discovered a wide range of positions and positions about overall gains course. I construe that meaning of overall gains course experiences insufficiency of accord about the meaning of total compensations heading. It benevolently understandable that numerous bookmans decipher this term in any case. For some individuals it is just an originative administrative asset that shows an organization from its best side. In any case, in my supposition Scott gives the best definition: â€Å" the pick by a chief of bookkeeping approaches to achieve explicit points. Total compensations heading can be fundamentally named either bookkeeping related, influencing the utilization of bookkeeping records through forceful or misleading uses of bookkeeping rules, or working related, influencing picks ma de by course sing the planning of contributing or working exercises, with the result that detailed overall gains are affected by these picks † ( Scott ) . We can recognize arranged inspirations for overall gains course. Without a doubt, it is non a sheltered activity and it ties to risk of mischief a notoriety and condemnable obligation. Organizations will arraign in this example simply on the off chance that they should and it is their last choice and pick. We can pick and spot the five the most widely recognized inspirations for this method: securities exchange benefits, covering private data, political costs, interior inspirations, and improving. The securities exchange depends on data, which implies that speculators need to cognize the forecast of the financial side of the organization before they purchase stock. Cooperation between those two natural structures is truly elevated on the grounds that puting in stock is an extremely dangerous activity. Financial specialists as often as possible put resources into fruitful and conceivably beneficial houses. Firms need to look great and solid in grouped monetary investigates. These components can simple power houses towards total compensations course. By run intoing viewpoint of financial specialists, organizations anticipate more significant yields, which will result better hard cash stream and stableness for an organization. On the different manus, by demoing negative salary and pour pay proclamation a house opens itself to a sensational reducing in the organization ‘s worth and capital. Which gives negative stock gross. The more grounded prompting so the higher possibili ty that executives will use overall gains heading to expand its salary, which will hold outcome on better visualization examination for organization ( Payne and Robb ) . To summarize, organization assault total compensations bearing sensibly effectively on the grounds that they need to stay in â€Å" game † and they anticipate that their challenger should make something very similar. Concealing private data is process whereby disguising some data executives accomplish their closures. It is difficult to explain the examples of house ‘s bookkeeping to the open members. On the off chance that the financial specialists can non recognize a technique for bookkeeping they almost certain will non put their benefits in the house. To better data of the organization, chiefs may follow less difficult and more clear strategies which result changing in overall gains regularly ( S. Verbruggen, J. Christaens, and K. Milis ) . The accompanying component that can follow up on monetary proclamations is specialists. Assessment Torahs and various sorts of specialists laws may affect voracity for adjustments in course overall gains. Huge organizations do non want to huge effect by government officials and control by authoritiess. Similarly long as lawmakers do non demonstrate at houses for insufficiency of fluid or wasteful stock parts, organizations accomplish they work. Monetary examinations are actually every now and again scrumptious piece for lawmakers. One of the most powerful factors in my conclusion is doing the CEO articulation great. It happens as a result of the voracity in individuals, especially for CEO or CFO and their impulses with their notoriety. It regularly exists when an organization changes its Chief official or when the CEO resigns and the person in question likes to go forward nice sentiment after its bearing, which of class outcome in an enormous total of fillips. Last representation of an inspiration for overall gains course is interior inspirations. Regardless of whether an organization does non hold to demo its tasks and total compensations to partners or specialists, it can in any case use this integral asset to make its yearly closures and to accomplish its open introduction program. I will focus presently on examples, procedure and quick one that chiefs use. How do houses pull off total compensations? The least demanding and the quickest way to cover or demo a cluster of total compensation in financial informations is by using collections. Orchestrating to J. Jones and his work in â€Å" Earnings heading during of import mitigation tests † , the greater part of the organizations utilize surprising gatherings or extremely like those that they use in their books to do up a distinction between its existent resources for its end. He designated every one of their techniques to grouped kinds of classs. Grouped kinds of these techniques are total compensations course through: explicit gatherings, disclosure and ‘real activity ‘ , cost assignment and development of managing which alludes to change financial informations. The primary sort of procedure that a house can use is overall gains bearing through explicit gatherings. It happens actually regularly that heading can use explicit bookkeeping models in its monetary articulation on the grounds that a house can happen itself specifically condition of affairss or specifically industry. These particular condition of affairss offers more space for various picks of course since statute or guidelines are non extremely explicit. As a result it gives satisfactory grounds to climb up houses overall gains. This free pick of perusing for specialists carries taking care of listeners and their tests. Instances of these examples are typically known in Bankss, protection and effects industry. In these ventures houses can sensibly simple oversaw credit ‘s losingss, rating of belongin

Introduction In this current time, age discrimination has increased reported incidents around the world. For many, this type of discrimination is hampering the rights of employees or artists who were given less priority to claim a certain privilege or opportunity. This is due to the preference of institutions and groups towards the younger generation who are more active and cooperative. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Law of Age Discrimination in the Workplace" essay for you Create order The aging population is concerned that this type of discrimination can significantly affect their emotional integrity due to the intimidating factors caused by stereotyping companies. However, there are new laws that are attempting to prevent this situation from happening in the future. Companies are usually apprehended after finding out that they have been involved in discriminative nature towards individuals who are subjected for apprehension. Now, the law of discrimination is slowly gaining presence around the world due to its negative impact on the community with the elderly population (Prokurat, 2012). As for the case of Liebman v. Metropolitan Life Insurance, the issue is all about discrimination on the basis of age. Employees were restricted from receiving benefits as well as having the threat of discontinuing their employment contract based on their older age group. As a result, their financial and emotional well-being is compromised due to the fact that elderly employees are already singled out by the company. The main goal is to employ younger individuals who are more technically skilled and does not have any medical conditions to continue the business efficiently. As a response to this application, limiting the aging workforce has been generating a concern to the community due to the unfair treatment of Metropolitan Life Insurance. Although there are laws prohibiting age discrimination, this law is not totally implemented as it causes an individual to become degraded with a privilege of working with the company who does not want older employees. Argument Older employees have benefits to claim, which are the insurances and job opportunities since they are still productive as the younger population. The most interesting fact about this feature is their ability to comprehend simple tasks provided by the company, old school etiquette. This is because there are new laws that provide multiple privileges for the elderly to receive benefits as they have already contributed significant productive practices in the community. Instances of age-related discrimination are often managed by the Supreme Court if there are brave elderly employees who managed to file for a legal lawsuit against their employer. The involvement of the Supreme Court generates public attention due to the nature of the lawsuit that provides a wake-up call for companies to start considering age discrimination to become more affiliated with equal treatment. An example is when an employee is fired due to a health condition, which attracts the attention of the authorities. Elderly employees are understandably weaker as compared to the younger generation. Employees aged 65 and above are mostly experiencing health problems due to a poor sedentary lifestyle that limits their physical and mental performance. They may need to work longer due to lack of retirement income and limited insurance coverages. This is usually the basis of some companies who have been considering if they are still capable of accomplishing several tasks as applied by the managers. The only problem is when the elderly become sick; it can significantly halt the operation of their performance, leading to a disruption or delays with a certain process. The impact of traditional common law constraints on managers could risk the companys productivity at a given time and strain the performance of the company if the company still employs an individual who is already suffering from discomforts at a given time. For example, a 72-year-old employee, employed with the company for 29 years, with a second diagnosis of breast cancer. With treatments and surgeries, she returns to work from FMLA and Short-Term Disability, however, she is tired and still healing. She is unable to handle the day-to-day responsibilities. With modifications to her workload, how long does the employer continue paying her wages when like employees have additional workloads? From the negative point of view from employers as managers, they believe that it is the right choice for elderly employees to have a limited employment contract. The main reason is that there are physical, mental, and emotional limitations associated with the skills and knowledge performance. As managers, the welfare of the company is always considered as an important consideration to ensure that the level of productivity is competent. Managers are aware that there are corresponding benefits awaiting elderly employees, which is beneficial as compared to the younger generation. This reason has been considering civil rights groups co ncerned due to the risk of disconnecting affected employees from having a productive socio-economic lifestyle. As a result, there is a surge in seniors filing bankruptcy according to the Washington Post (Singletary, 2018). There is a higher cost of living and Social Security alone will not sustain their debt without a supplemental income. In response to the legal laws, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) is an institution that regulates all issues of age-related discrimination within the workplace. It conducts an investigation of companies involved with complaints of discriminating their employees based on their age. The Age Discrimination Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) is another law that aims to sanction any company, individual, or group involved in segregating other individuals basing on their age, race, color, nationality, or gender (Clarkson, 2012). There are corresponding punishments and financial liabilities for individuals who have been proven on committing discrimination against other individuals or even groups. For Older Worker Benefits Protection Act (OWBPA), it aims to provide more benefits for the elderly population to have more opportunities to maintain their productive socio-economic status. By reaching the age of 65, there are several benefits and compensation opportunities that are pro vided to them regardless of the company they are currently affiliated to in order to prevent any risk of committing financial losses (Echavarria, 2015). Definition of Age Discrimination When we say age discrimination, this is the process wherein an individual has been degraded with their right or privilege basing on their age aside from their health conditions. This scenario usually occurs at the workplace wherein the affected employee has been regarded as a liability by the company or an individual responsible for discriminating an employee. At first, the affected employee may not realize that their age is the factor for influencing their employment viability. However, they become emotionally frustrated whenever discovering that they have been segregated due to their age. Therefore, there are laws such as the ADEA who can be responsible for monitoring companies involved in these illegal acts towards the elderly for a possibility of apprehension. As a result, it seeks to protect all affected employees who are at risk from being laid off by the company they are currently working. Jobs that restrict older employees One major job example is a pilot because airline companies are always ensuring the full safety of their passengers while traversing in mid-air. Pilots who are already old are required not to continue their service, especially if they failed recent vision testing. The visual acuity of people who are already in their elder stage can be observed having a blurred vision. Healthcare employees such as doctors and nurses are also required to retire at the age of 65, in which their physical capacity may no longer sustain their productive skills and knowledge at the workplace. As a physician or nurse, working in the healthcare facility require physical demand that elders cannot sustain while at work. In this case, there are several factors such as acquiring a nosocomial infection, accidents, and the risk of injury that other health care practitioners are not considering any lawsuits from the employees (Skelsey, 2013). Protection from discrimination Employers can protect themselves from any risk of facing discriminative nature by means of complying with the law. Every employer must understand that there are EEOC applications that monitor companies from any risk of being involved in discriminatory practices. These are institutions who are involved in illegal practice for excluding their employees based on their age. The ADEA is a provision wherein companies or any involved employer will be subject to legal proceedings once there is strong evidence that they have been involved in such practices. It prohibits employers from forcing these aged employees into retirement if they are in nonmanagerial positions with other criteria (Clarkson, 2012). For OWBPA, employers are raising compensation and benefits for elderly individuals on the basis that they can become a role model to other companies who provide higher benefits for older employees. The 72-year-old employee with breast cancer should be provided accommodations for her hardship (Clarkson, 2012) which may require modifying her job responsibilities to avoid a potential discrimination claim. Hiring practices With the issue against existing employees on the basis of retirement age, there are certain practices wherein employees are indeed needed to resign after several years of serving the company. One of the most critical issues is the separation pay because when there is a forced retirement for employees, it is important for the companies to pay their separation wage. In this case, employees will have a financial bridge to establish a business after their professional career demise. This employers right is regarded as the appointment or dismissal of an employee. This is in accordance to the procedures that comply with the laws to prevent any risk of being discriminated. Furthermore, employers have the right decision to protect the interest of their brand or companys image from any intent to abuse their authority just to conduct illicit activities against the company (Perry, 2014). For employees over forced retirement indicates that the employer may have the right to protect its own image and reputation from any unjust practices made by the employee. This is because there are conditions wherein the employee may have caught doing illegal or unacceptable practices that promoted harm and intimidation to other employees. When the employee becomes violent enough to cause a significant damage to the company, forced resignation or retirement regardless of age is allowed under the law. In terms of health-related problems, the company may also have the right to ensure that the employee should undergo an immediate rehabilitation. This is regardless of age wherein the employee should not be exerting more effort as their health might be further compromised if they continue to render their service with the company (Levin, 2012) As for employees who were terminated, the main basis is their behavioral characteristics while working with the company. In favor of an employers rights, they have always the prerogative to take action against an employee who was caught involved in activities that violate the rules of the company. Sometimes, there are company laws that restrict employees from performing something that has been causing a conflict of interest with the company. One example is when the employee is caught involved in fraudulent transactions that gravely affected the practices of the whole institution. Therefore, the employers believe that they are not going anything wrong because they are just protecting their company and the safety of all other employees of the company (Tuccille, 2012). Employers have the right to terminate their employee if there are scenarios that are considered before deciding to discontinue their working contracts. The first provision is that when the contract has been breached, the employer has the right to let go of the employee regardless of the age, race gender, or nationality. Possible effects of employees within the workplace The first possible impacts of having an older employee within the workplace are the presence of seniority, in which the main goal is to impose an autocratic ambiance to promote discipline within the community or society. Younger employees will learn how to become respectful with other employees, which is responsible for promoting an optimistic camaraderie between two or more employees and other stakeholders. This is all about controlling behaviors that are usually presumed inappropriate under the eyes of elder employees. The second effect is to create balanced behavioral instincts that regulate the attitudes of different personalities in the workplace. Older employees always promote harmonious working relationships with the younger employees by means of sharing their experiences that are used to prevent any dangerous remarks affecting the integrity of the company. Having a good camaraderie enhances harmonious working relationships because older employees share their knowledge regardi ng their past experiences with the similar situation. In the case mentioned earlier of the employee returning from bouts of breast cancer, she never abused her time and filed for her benefits accordingly. This sets an example for the younger team members of time management. This is because older employees have already experienced certain practices that are important for the companys implementation of laws such as age discrimination that affects the security of tenure in their respective job. These older employees are able to provide previous reactions from other individuals who encountered discriminatory actions from their past employment experience (Evans, 2012). It has been learned that age discrimination is a serious offense that can be committed by an individual or group at work. This is solely based on the prejudiced actions applied by the involved offending party towards the victim that has been enduring the agony of suffering from mistreatment. Managers are aware that age discrimination can bring a significant threat to the psychological capacity of an affected individual. The main reason behind this is that employees can be terminated without prior notice, making them financially unstable after the incident. The best solution is to analyze the existing laws applied by the company to discover some rules that promote prejudiced practices towards the rights of employees. For this reason, there are plenty of times that a person can change the existing law and implementation made by the operating institution with respect to the rights of their employees in compliance with the laws such as EEOC, ADEA, and OWBPA (Watkins, 2011). Doing the rig ht thing to ensure the quality of our employees should be a priority in all business structures. Creating an open communication structure will equip managers with the understanding of where the senior employees are in their careers and to support their need to continue working under the circumstances or to assist if one makes the decision to face retirement. The Great Minds Of The 17th Century Scientific Revolution

Introduction Isaac Newton was born on January 4, 1643, in Woolsthorpe, England, who would have guessed that an established physicist and mathematician was brought in to this world right then and there. Newton is credited as one of the great minds of the 17th century Scientific Revolution. He has various contributions to the world, some of which include his discoveries in optics, motion and mathematics, all while developing the principles of modern physics. In 1687, he published his most honored work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), which has been noted as the single most significant book on physics. Without the laws Newton identified, we would not be where we are today in terms of modern physics. Things we know and things we see as basic to the world wouldn’t be possible: modern technology such as televisions, cell phones and computers would not exist and space exploration would not have been anywhere near as it is today.. Shaping a Communicative Curriculum Essay Example

Shaping a Communicative Curriculum Essay These said components are: 1 . Language Arts, or Language Analysis, which includes many of the exercises used n mother-tongue programs to focus attention on formal accuracy or on forms of English such as phonology, morphology, and syntax; 2. Language for a Purpose, or Language Experience, which is in contrast with Language Analysis because it uses English for real and immediate communicative goals; 3. My Language is Me: Personal English Language Use, which seeks to involve learners psychological and intellectual aspects and which implies respect for learners as they use English for self-expression; 4. You Be. Ill Be: Theater Arts. Beyond the Classroom, which aims to prepare learners to use English in the world beyond. The goals of this proposal are to offer greater opportunities to each and every student of English language and to accommodate the diverse learning styles among learners. B. These components are, Indeed, of great significance to motivate learners to different language contexts. C. Application I found this reading material to be very much useful and helpful to my career as an English teacher to my non-native student-speakers. It gave me hints on how to initiate an authentic and meaningful communication among classroom activities. Indeed, learning is a process of creative construction and involves trial and error; thereby, l, as a teacher, should encourage more my students to speak in English and would not hamper their communicative skills by reminding them always the grammar rules. This approach is no doubt an intent to capitalize the collective smarts of the learners and give everyone a chance to grow in appreciation of diversity. II. GRAMMAR POINTS A. Language Arts 1 . Contrast Drill pairs of words having almost the same sounds (e. G. Bet and bit, hat and hot and hut, etc. ) are presented to the students and practice them for a correct pronunciation 2. Synonyms and Antonyms for vocabulary building; words with similar and opposite meanings are given to the students and are required for memorization 3. Word Puzzle for vocabulary enhancement; to test the memory of the students 4. Error Identification grammar enrichment; to test how far the students can apply the grammar rules 5. Information Gap vocabulary and memory building; to test the memory and the word power of the language learners B. Language for a Purpose 1 . The students propose a question, develop a hypothesis, explore ethos for investigating the question, choose one of the methods, then conduct research and draw conclusions based on the information gathered. . Language Experience Approach is a strategy in which students, as a group, describe an experience in their own words orally (using first or second language) as the teacher records their history. 3. Learning Cycle is a sequence of lessons designed to have students engage in exploratory investigations, construct meaning out of their findings, propose tentative explanations and solutions, and relate concepts to their own understanding. 4. Debate to develop learners speaking skill with convincing power 5. Jigsaw is a cooperative learning strategy in which everyone becomes an expert and shares learning so that eventually all group members know the content. C. My Language is Me: Personal English Language Use 1 . Essay Writing to give the learners a chance to express their own point of view 2. Poetry Writing to develop the learners poetic skill in writing 4. Dialog Journal is a strategy that uses Journals as a way for students and their teachers to communicate regularly and carry on a private conversation 5. Free Talking to provide language learners with freedom of speech D. You Be, Ill Be: Theater Arts 1. Modeling 2. Role-Play allows students to assume the identity of another person 3. CKern_FINALLESSONPLAN Essays - Learning, Education, Free Essays Final Lesson Plan Chloe Kern ESEPSY 2309 Ohio State University Age: First Grade Subject: Literature Topic: Elements of a Story Time + Pacing Central Focus of Lesson This lesson will focus on the different elements of a story and allowing the children to see these elements in a book. Objectives Students will be able to list the different elements of a story Students will be able to identify characters, settings, and major events in a story (with prompting) Students will create their own art that includes elements of a story (character, setting, action) Key Vocabulary (From Video) Beginning Middle End Characters Setting Main Idea Prior Academic Learning and Prerequisite Skills Students will be using what they know about stories to recognize the different elements of a story. Students should have prior experience with listening to stories being read aloud and answering comprehension questions. Students should be aware of classroom rules and procedures. Knowledge of how to use markers, crayons, colored pencils, and how to put art supplies away will also be important. Materials Board Paper with 3 categories for each child Projector Computer Colored pencils/markers/crayons (Book): Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes (Book can be changed if this one is not available) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCkdSB1TptU ) Lesson Introduction Gather the children in the "circle time" area of the classroom. Explain to them that today they are going to be learning about the different parts of a story. Begin by asking them some questions about things that they think are in a story. Write their ideas on the board even if they are not correct and even if they are missing elements. Next, read the story Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCkdSB1TptU ). Have the children sing/chant along with the repeated phrase in the story and use the projector to show the pages of the book. Ask comprehension questions about the story. Examples: Who was the story about? Where was Pete in this story? What were some of the things that Pete did in this story? What part of his clothes did Pete keep singing about? 10 min Introduction of New Information Show the video: Parts of a Story | Language Arts Song for Kids | English for Kids | Jack Hartmann (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_nePjWXecQ ) Play the video twice. The first time the children should just watch, but the second time through they are allowed to sing/move along with the music. After the video ask the children if there was anything they missed on their list about the parts of a story. Write down the elements that they remember from the video on the board. Some prompting may be necessary but it is important that the children recognize the different elements mainly on their own. 5-7 min Learning Activities After the list on the board is complete, it is important to discuss the differences between each of the words in the video (beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, main idea). Begin with the word the beginning. After they understand what each word means, bring the original story that was read aloud into this discussion. Questions to ask What is the beginning of the story? What did Pete the Cat do in the beginning of the story? What is the middle of a story? What are some things that Pete the Cat did in the middle of the story? What is the end of the story? What did Pete do at the end of the story? What do we call the person that a story is about? Who was our story that we read about? What is the setting of a story? Where did Pete the Cat go in his story? What is the main idea of a story? What was our story that we read out loud about? After this discussion, send the children back to their seats to begin the next activity. 10 min Interactive Learning Begin by explaining that now the children will be drawing their own stories. They will need to think of a character and a setting, and something the character does (action). Show teacher example of a completed picture. Prompting may be necessary for some students. Begin by asking them who they want the story to be about. Then ask them where the story is going to take place. This will help the students to organize their thoughts, but it will not give them any direct answers. 15-20 min Closure/Recap Use this time to make any concepts more clear or answer any questions. Each child will be given

All About the Ancient Roman Family

All About the Ancient Roman Family The Roman family was called familia, from which the Latin word family is derived. The familia could include the triad with which we are familiar, two parents and children (biological or adopted), as well as slaves and grandparents. The head of the family (referred to as the pater familias) was in charge of even adult males in the familia. See Jane F. Gardners Family and Familia in Roman Law and Life reviewed by Richard Saller in The American Historical Review, Vol. 105, No. 1. (Feb. 2000), pp. 260-261. Purposes of the Roman Family The Roman family was the basic institution of the Roman people. The Roman family transmitted morality and social status across generations. The family educated its own young. The family tended its own hearth, while the hearth goddess, Vesta, was tended by state priestess called Vestal Virgins. The family needed to continue so that dead ancestors could be honored by their descendants and connections made for political purposes. When this failed to be motive enough, Augustus Caesar offered financial incentives to families to breed. Marriage The wife of the pater familias (the mater familias) might have been considered part of her husbands family or part of her natal family, depending on the conventions of the marriage. Marriages in Ancient Rome could be in manu in the hand or sine manu without the hand. In the former case, the wife became part of her husbands family; in the latter, she remained tied to her family of origin. Divorce and Emancipation When we think of divorce, emancipation, and adoption, we usually think in terms of ending relationships between families. Rome was different. Inter-familial alliances were essential for garnering the support needed for political ends. Divorces could be granted so that partners could remarry into other families to establish new connections, but the family connections established via first marriages need not be broken. Emancipated sons were still entitled to shares of paternal estates. Adoption Adoption also brought families together and allowed continuity to families that would otherwise have no one to carry on the family name. In the unusual case of Claudius Pulcher, adoption into a plebeian family, led by a man younger than himself, allowed Claudius (now using the plebeian name Clodius) to run for election as tribune of the plebs. For information on the adoption of freedmen, see The Adoption of Roman Freedmen, by Jane F. Gardner. Phoenix, Vol. 43, No. 3. (Autumn, 1989), pp. 236-257. Familia vs. Domus In legal terms, familia included all those under the power of the pater familias; sometimes it meant only the slaves. The pater familias was usually the oldest male. His heirs were under his power, as were the slaves, but not necessarily his wife. A boy without a mother or children could be a pater familias. In non-legal terms, the mother/wife could be included in the familia, although the term usually used for this unit was domus, which we translate as home. See Familia, Domus, and the Roman Conception of the Family, by Richard P. Saller. Phoenix, Vol. 38, No. 4. (Winter, 1984), pp. 336-355. Household and Family Religion in Antiquity, edited by John Bodel and Saul M. Olyan Meaning of Domus Domus referred to the physical house, the household, including the wife, ancestors, and descendants. The domus referred to the places where the pater familias exerted his authority or acted as dominus. Domus was also used for the dynasty of the Roman emperor. Domus and familia were often interchangeable. Pater Familias vs. Pater or Parent While pater familias is usually understood as head of the family, it had the primary legal meaning of estate owner. The word itself was usually used in legal contexts and required only that the person be able to possess property. The terms usually used to denote parenting were parens parent, pater father, and mater mother. See Pater Familias, Mater Familias, and the Gendered Semantics of the Roman Household, by Richard P. Saller. Classical Philology, Vol. 94, No. 2. (Apr. 1999), pp. 182-197.

None Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

None - Essay Example The family is met with a severe accident but all of them are saved to be killed at the hands of the serial killer, Misfit. This story is one of those in which complex and comprehensive themes are presented in clear and plain language. This is a simple story like a picture which is able to speak a thousand words. The major themes in this story include faith, morality and self conscience along with other religious connotations. Another major theme revolves around trust, mistrust and faith which the author has portrayed specifically during the first stop of the family at The Tower with their owners. The owner, Red Sammy Butts and his wife get engaged in a conversation with the family. During this conversation, the owner and the grandmother talk about the reality of the world and the moral ethics and codes which were ignored by people in everyday life. They talk about how no one in the world could be trusted anymore. Red Sammy Butts shares his experiences of mistrust about how he helped some people and gave them something on credit and never saw them again. This conversation leads to the ugly truth of the world, the presence of good and evil and the ultimate reality that no one can be trusted. The title of the story itself portrays the theme of the story that good men are hard to find this world, those who live, not for themselves, but for others. The author has tried to describe the shortcomings of the traditional meaning of good and bad. This traditional concept states that people can either be good or bad but in this story, O`Connor has tried to depict that both good and bad can exist within a single person. The author enforces that a person can find both good and bad but it just depends on the way he searches for it. Similarly, the initial story is portrayed in such a way that the reader would think that the story shows a good family and a bad convict, misfit. However, this is a false impression which is corrected at the end of the story. After the accident, th e grandmother and the whole family meets misfit and his gang. The grandmother`s judgmental nature results in a serious conflict between her and misfit which results in the death of the entire family. The grandmother thought that the only thing that will save her from the killer was her supposed good deeds and good nature. However, the story initially shows that the grandmother is a self serving person and she is clearly a racist and this is shown by her comment about the street children as she says, â€Å"Little niggers in the country don't have things like we do† (A Good Man is hard to find, Web). This clearly shows that the grandmother was a racist and during her encounter with Misfit, she thought she was good and her goodness will save her from the convict. She even called Misfit and â€Å"alleged criminal† and tried to enforce her superior position which further worsened the conflict between them. However, Misfit had more power than the grandmother at that time and he decided to end her life. Faith is a person`s belief in something whether it be God, a religion or even a personal trait, for example. The Misfit did not have any such belief in any religion but he seems to have faith on himself. The grandmother even tries to bring in religion and Jesus to change Misfit`s mind. She tries to save herself by bringing in Jesus’

Literature review ( Dehydration associated with the use of diuretics) Research Paper

Literature review ( Dehydration associated with the use of diuretics) - Research Paper Example In spite of having a related African heritage, the citizens of African nationality who live in the West Indies and Africa have lesser rates of hypertension than do African Americans. This means that researches into how diuretics affect African Americans are vital in establishing if the rate of mortality due to hypertension in this ethnic group can be checked. Past researches have indicated that there is a higher incidence of hypertension in African Americans than among Whites. One of the major reasons for this has been given as the higher rate of cardiovascular sicknesses among African Americans. The long list of supposed causes for this frequency suggests that the genuine reasons are still unidentified (Sacks and Campos 2010). Biological disparities in the systems concerned in the environment or blood pressure control, as well as the lifestyle habits of African Americans are viewed as being among the probable causes of high blood pressure. The greater frequency of hypertension in African Americans living in the United States and not Africa seem to indicate that behavioral as well as environmental characteristics can also be considered as reasons for the heightened rates of hypertension among African Americans (Sacks and Campos 2010). They could also imply that there are mechanisms that increase the blood pressure in African Americans th at are dormant in the Africans that reside in Africa. Disparities in the individual experiences of the environment between Caucasian and African Americans have also been given as a reason for the difference in the experience of hypertension. Aspects like dietary habits, socioeconomic status, stress, existence of social networks, and health behaviors are also believed to influence the prevalence of hypertension. Among the outcomes of differential nutritional habits, surplus adiposity surfaces as a natural candidate to clarify the higher frequency of hypertension among African Americans, who have a 51%

Hidden Messages in Easy Rider :: Movies Film

What are the hidden messages in Easy Rider There are many symbols of freedom and individuality in Dennis Hoppers movie Easy Rider. The movie Easy Rider revolves around two bikers, Wyatt and Billy, making a trip from Los Angeles to New Orleans, to attend Mardi Gras. The first scene in the movie involves the two protagonists selling a large amount of cocaine to a gentleman in a Rolls Royce. After the drug deal two the bikers begin their journey to Mardi Gras, but not before Wyatt removes his watch and throws it on the ground. This action is shows Wyatt’s pursuit of freedom, because time serves only to constrain them. Once on the road you learn that their names are Wyatt and Billy, a reference to Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid who are considered American legends, as well as outlaws. Wyatt rides a chopper with the stars and stripes on the gas tank and on his helmet while sporting the now clichà © leather jacket. Billy is dressed up like a cowboy; he is wearing all tan leather with a wide brim hat. Also throughout the movie Billy refers to Wyatt as Captain America. All of these things serve to ingrain the belief that they embody the American dream which is to earn enough money to pursue your dream. It just so happens that their dream is freedom, the same belief that led to the creation of the United States. Billy and Wyatt of them go through a series of adventures, first stopping off at a motel where they're rejected, regardless of the glowing vacancy sign. This shows that their culture is not accepted in the rest of the world. They leave the motel and camp out in the wilderness. At a point, Wyatt's bike gets a flat, and they stop at a farm to fix it. It is at this point that the film makes a comparison of the bikers to cowboys. As Wyatt is fixing his tire a man in the background is shoeing his horse. This is making the point that Wyatt is the new version of the cowboy and his chopper is the new cowboy’s horse. During this scene there is an exchange between Wyatt and the farmer where Wyatt tells the farmer how much he admires his farm because he built it with his own hands. This is the first time that you get an idea of Wyatt’s values.
